오늘의 영어학습 표현 

by the look of~  보아하니,
the right connections 제대로 된 연줄
put a crimp in / on something ~  ~ 을 방해하다. 
 sharpish [영국 비격식] 빨리, 곧.  

 

1. Don't spend a lot of time here though. Not by the look of it.

(여기서 시간을 많이 보내진 않나 보군. 보아하니)

 

-by the look of~  보아하니, 딱 보니까. 위 문장에서 not 을 넣어서 앞에 don't을 더 강조하는 역할을 해줌.

- ex : It was an old place by the look of it. 보아하니 오래된 곳 같았어.

- ex : No one seems to have used it by the look of it. 보아하니 아무도 사용하지 않는 것 같아.

- ex : By the look of her hands, she definitely played the violin.  그녀의 손을 보니 과거에 바이올린을 분명 연주했을 거야.

- ex : Don't spend a lot of time here though, not by the look of it.

        = Don't spend a lot of time here though by the look of it.

- ex : You don't seem to like her that much, not by the look of you. 보아하니, 그녀를 그다지 좋아하지 않는 것 같네.

- ex : They didn't seem surprised, not by the look of their faces. 별로 놀라지 않은 것 같네, 얼굴을 보아하니.

 

2. Unless you've got the right connections, which I've got, she doesn't.

(그래서 제대로 된 연결책이 필요한데, 난 아는 사람이 있거든. 그녀는 없었고.)

 

- connection. 인맥, 연줄 / have connections 연줄, 인맥이 있다.

- ex : It's hard to get a job without any connections. 연줄 없이 구직하기 쉽지 않다.

- ex : I have no connection with artistic circles. 나는 예술계에 아무런 연고가 없어.

- ex : I don't have the right connections to win the new business. 계약을 따낼 제대로 된 연줄이 없어.

- ex : Ask Billy, I'm pretty sure he's got the right connections. 빌리한테 요청해 봐, 걔는 분명 맞는 연줄이 있을 거야.

 

- know the right people  적임자를 알다.

-  ex : Katie knows the right people. 케이티는 자기 업무에 필요한 사람들을 알고 있다.

- ex : I don't think we can do it. This is out of my field. 아무래도 우리 이걸 할 수 없을 것 같아. 내 분야가 아니야.

- ex : Not if you know the right people, I know this guy who can help us out. 그 일 잘하는 사람을 알고 있으면 괜찮아 내가 아는 사람이 있는데 우리를 도와줄 수 있을 것 같아.

 

3.  Well, I was until you put a crimp on it.

(뭐.. 당신이 방해하기 전까진 그랬지)

 

- put a crimp in / on something ~  ~ 을 방해하다. ~에 부정적인 영향을 끼치다.

- crimp는 '주름,컬' 이외에도 방해물, 훼방을 나타내는 구어 표현. 

- ex : I'm sorry to put a crimp in your vacation plans, but we need you this weekend. 당신 휴가 계획에 훼방을 놓아 미안하지만, 이번 주말 당신이 필요해요.

- ex: His job is putting a serious crimp in his relationship. He never gets to see his girlfriend after work for months. 그의 일은 여자친구와의 관계에 심각한 영향을 끼친다. 몇 달이고 일이 끝나고 여자친구를 만날 수가 없기 때문이다.

 

4. We agree a 70/30 split. She doesn't like it but she needs the money, sharpish.

(7:3으로 나누기로 했지. 마음에 안 들어 했지만 돈이 급하게 필요한 것 같았어)

 

- sharpish [영국 비격식] 빨리, 곧.  날카로운/영리한/급격한/재빠른 걸 나타내는 표현. 여기에 -ish를 붙이면 재빠르게 라는 뜻으로 영국 구어체에서 접할 수 있음.

- ex : You have to pack your things sharpish. We haven't got enough time left. 너 빨리 짐 챙겨. 시간이 얼마 안 남았네

- ex : We'd better leave pretty sharpish if we want to catch The Tube. 우리 지하철 타려면 빨리 가야겠어.
